BURKE RD. BILLABONG RESERVE NEWS - NOVEMBER 2010

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE!

After 60mm of rain over 30 hours the billabong flooded. Water covered the bike path at several places, and the billabong was full to the brim.

RMIT STUDENTS

RMIT Conservation & Land Management Students visited the Reserve again on Wednesday 16 October. They worked on their 'Natural Restoration Programs' unit and then did an hour of weeding around the 2009 plantings.

WOMBAT VISIT

While working at the Reserve on Friday 22 October, I was surprised at a WOMBAT turning off the bike path and having a chew on the Poas near the new Reserve sign.

It then ran past me into the 2008/9 planting area. It looked to be a healthy adult.

OCTOBER WORK DAY

The October workday was well attended and about 100 small trees and shrubs were planted into the woodland area. Peter and Amy from the City of Boroondara Bush crew joined in the planting. This area has now been sprayed and David has mowed around the tree guards, but some have been displaced by the floodwater.

THE NEXT COMMUNITY WORKDAY IS
FRIDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2010
9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Plans for the November work day are to plant the last of this year’s trees and shrubs, and to do some weeding of weed shrubs.
Water permitting
