BURKE RD. BILLABONG RESERVE NEWS - FEBRUARY 2012

FLOODGATE

The pipe and one way valve has now been placed in the culvert. David, Russell and I laid the pipe on the January workday and the flap was added on 2nd February. The covering over the pipe needs a little more work to compact it and stop floods stripping it bare. The work has raised what was a large dip in a track to a fairly even level..

WILDLIFE?
Someone with a sense of humour has placed a sign on the Burke Rd. bridge underpass - "GIVE WAY TO STOCK - NEXT 200 m"
MICROBATS

There were microbats in 2 tubes on 21 January. Eight were caught and assessed but another 4 escaped from the tubes. All were Gould's Wattled bats. Of the eight assessed, 4 were bats that were banded in September and were previously captured at Burke Rd. Reserve. It would appear that the Burke Rd. bats are a totally different colony to the Wilson Reserve bats.

In January seven people weeded more of the 2008 area, planted 60 Kidney weed, while David, Russell and I laid the pipe on the Friday workday. On the Sunday workday some of the regulars were joined by volunteers from the Kokoda Youth Challenge Association and the twelve of us weeded part of the
