BURKE RD. BILLABONG RESERVE NEWS - APRIL 2013

SHIPPING CONTAINER

The shipping container was delivered on 13 March which means that our wheelie bins, tools and marquee can be stored on site.

MICROBATS

The microbat colony continues to grow with two unbanded bats taking up residence in the tubes this month. All the pups born last November/December have reached adulthood and need to now put on weight before winter when the insect supply reduces.

PLANTING

After a long dry summer, the recent rains encouraged me to plant some of the seedlings that had survived the summer, so on our last working day for March, we planted about 100 plants, mostly kidney weed (Dichondra repens) along with some bidgee widgee, goosefoot fishweed, goodenia and basalt daisy.

FUNDING.

We received funding from BPay View (reported in the Boroondara Leader of 12 March) for tools and protective clothing, and have so far purchased a new and more powerful brush-cutter and 'dutch hoes'. The brush cutter with 'chain-saw' blade has been put to good use already, removing woody weeds north of the billabong.

We have also received advice that another grant has been approved, this for a slasher.

COMMUNITY WORK DAYS

On work days we have continued with weeding and have started planting again now the weather is cooler and some rain has come again. Work has also continued on the Trad with spraying making a noticeable difference beside the path.
